Giving personality and brand to a Flagrant made Ruby Gem
-

A sampling of the exploration process for creating the brand.
Jim Remsik of Flagrant wanted to create an Open Source Ruby Gem that allowed users to automate loading sites to better understand whether or not they contain errors. He wanted this to be friendly and practical, making running synthetic checks easy and keeping an eye on the paths that matter most. When it came to creating a brand for this Gem, Jim wanted to use the name Perchfall. This name comes from the history of the phrase βcanary in the coal mineβ. This phrase comes from when miners used to carry caged birds with them into the mine as an early detection of dangerous odorless colorless gases. The canaries had a high metabolism that caused them to be affected by gas faster. Many of the canaries died, but there were also resuscitation kits miners could use to try to help their birds back to life and miners built relationships with these creatures. Jim wanted to capture that feeling of friendship that grew between the miners and their birds.
