Visuals / GoValidate - Florida Smart Wallet

Branding, custom illustration, and mobile app design for digital identity sharing and verification

GoValidate delivers digital identity verification products to US States and agencies. We led product and visual design for their first apps to use new standards around digital identity and mobile drivers’ license technology (mDL).
  • A mobile license and registration for multiple vehicles are shown in a phone on top of an array of Florida Smart Wallet screens that show ID fields to share, vehicle information, and how sharing credentials works.

Product design and definition for digital identity and mDL

While GoValidate’s development team worked at the cutting edge of identity verification technology to define industry standards, they needed a partner to meet them at the bleeding edge with expert design. We got to design new use experiences so a driver can find, manage, and share registration and insurance information linked with their license—even across multiple vehicles.

We worked with GoValidate to understand the underlying technology and protocols around digital identity—a complex dance between many systems. Then, we created user flows to define an intuitive, accessible, friction-free product experience across Florida Smart Wallet reader and holder apps.

Streamlined, secure share sessions for reader app to verify

With the reader app, law enforcement, TSA, and small businesses (bars, liquor stores, etc.) can conduct secure, contactless share sessions to verify things like age, vehicles, insurance, or any other credentials stored in the holder’s app. We pioneered designs that allow sharing multiple credentials at once.

  • Array of custom illustrations for the Florida Smart Wallet app that brighten up the app and guide users through complex concepts.

Custom branding and illustration with building trust in mind

We created a new brand identity for Florida Smart Wallet inspired by Florida license plates. The custom illustration library we created forms a key element of the brand as a powerful storytelling tool that guides people through complex concepts, stories, and scenarios with clarity and ease. They add a sense of charm without being overly humorous.

  • An illustration and a few introductory sentences are shown on a phone. To the left of the phone are various screens from the Holder side of the Florida Smart Wallet including camera permissions and the activity log.

Safety, privacy, and real-world context in mind

The holder app allows credential holders control over every interaction, with data separated into categories to make sharing easy. Wherever someone presents an ID—socializing at bars, during a nerve-wracking traffic stop, or in a rush at the check-out counter—they have a simple and trusted way to present their appropriate information. Consent and privacy guided our designs, allowing users a streamlined experience with options for more granular control over their data and activity log.

  • A grid of Florida Smart Wallet screens in dark mode are overlaid on top of teal and orange palettes used for the app.

    Dark mode and design system

With nighttime drivers and carding at bars in mind, we set up a color system that supports dark mode, all while maintaining accessibility and the unique look and feel of the brand. We equipped GoValidate with a color system and a robust, flexible library of custom components and illustrations—a strong design foundation they can use to adapt and customize digital identity applications for other states and agencies in the future.
