Case Study / Unifocal
Multi-tenant platform for streamlining construction project and inclusion goals
Client Context
Unifocal is a construction consulting organization that provides its customers with solutions in managing their construction projects to meet their inclusion and diversity goals. Construction projects are often huge and costly while lasting years as well as involving a lot of paperwork. Founder and CEO Tyler Sims recognized this as an opportunity to bring construction into the technological space and to automate much of the bookkeeping and tracking needed for these multimillion dollar construction projects.

The Challenge
The team at Unifocal had never previously built software before and needed a consultancy to not only provide the know-how in building and designing a multi-tenant product, but to also work on a fast timeline to develop pilot ready software for their customers’ upcoming construction projects.
Important necessities that Flagrant had to keep in mind in developing this software for Unifocal were to:
- Integrate and ingest data from their customers’ current tools and have minimal user touchpoints so that users wouldn’t have to worry about spending a lot of time inputting data and information and be able to onboard into the system quicker.
- Provide quick, digestible data for construction managers and contractors to check in on their multiple construction projects.
-
Be a flexible enough system to accommodate for varying construction project inclusion requirements and goals.

The Solution
Flagrant built a thorough pilot product for Unifocal and their customers including:
- Business tracking dashboard to monitor their projects allowing customers to reach their project and inclusion goals within budget
- PDF report exporting of customized project data
- An admin interface allowing administrators to onboard new customers / manage existing ones
- Contractor authentication managed using passwordless magic links to give external users access to the Unifocal system
- Worker certification tracking and data uploading to save on resources and time spent on human-inputted data
- Flexible setup for integrations with third party APIs (like Oracle Textura and QuickBooks) for automatic data syncing
-
Built an open-ended contract structure in which project managers could establish contracts with contractors and subcontractors to capture the complicated, multi-level nature of construction contracts

The Result
Flagrant collaborated closely with Unifocal in order to deliver a functional pilot for their customers’ project start dates. We provided a platform with deep back-end functionalities that would function in tandem with the tools that Unifocal’s customers would be using as well as an accessible front-end interface for their customers from construction project managers to subcontractors users to input and update their project data.
