Custom swag designs with a trash twist

Flagrant sponsors and attends a handful of conferences throughout the year, offering us the opportunity to bring some swag along to give out. This year we decided to create custom illustrated playing cards, specifically inspired by RubyConf in Las Vegas. We themed the cards after how the designers on the team talk about their design process and their lovingly called “trash pile” of designs they work in.

Box design and sketches of cards

The box is fashioned to look like a dumpster covered in garbage and graffiti, with a possum on top of a pile of trash in front of it. We wanted to continue the “trash pile” theme and this felt like a great way to utilize the shape of the box.

Each suit was assigned a different animal from Flagrant’s line of “Garbage Pile Friends”, animals featured in a series of swag items on our site. GPF already had possums, raccoons, and junkyard dogs, but we needed to add the chicken, another beloved Flagrant animal, into the mix in order to have 4 distinct categories.

    The final design

The box and card designs came together beautifully and perfectly funky. We were able to hire a magician, [Geoff Williams](https://www.geoffwilliamsmagic.com/), to come and perform tricks at the RubyConf event and create a trick specifically for Flagrant ([give it a try yourself!](https://www.beflagrant.com/magic/)). The cards were a big hit and we gave out every single deck we had packed for the trip. We still have a few more and if you’re lucky enough to catch a Flagranteer at an event ([XO Rub](https://www.xoruby.com/)y, perhaps?), you might just be able to grab a deck!
