A Knitting Design Story

Phase Knitting Yarn
The first sighting Look at all ye yarn, oh so many choices to make Blank canvas, we meet again
Endless possibilities So many combinations of stitches from knits, purls, to yarnovers So many colors, gradients, to shadows at the tip of your fingers
A plethora of tools Circular needles, darning needles, crochet hooks, stitch markers, scissors, etc. Adobe, Figma, Photoshop, pen + paper, etc.
Laying the groundwork Got my pattern and a gauge swatch (well, it’s partially done) Got my laptop and a design system (well, it’s partially done)
Different perspectives There’s a right side (not actually right, just the front) and wrong side (not actually wrong, just the back) to every piece and sometimes it’s easier to spot mistakes when looking on the other side of a project Getting critiques and feedback from other designers and peers is infinitely helpful when I’m stuck
Making progress Is this anything yet? Is this anything yet?
Backup plans needed Insert a lifeline into a piece of work so I can undo multiple rows (just in case I really mess up) That digital archive of 324830 versions of that one screen does come in handy when I need to pull that one button asset I made 6 months ago
Making mistakes Rip it, rip it, rip it CMD+Z and version history 4 lyfe
Time is a construct It’s been 84 years since I started this sweater It’s been 84 years since I started designing this dashboard
Everywhere I look There’s yarn on my couch, on my bed, under my desk, yarn is everywhere Pinterest, Mobbin, Behance, Dribbble, nature, inspiration is everywhere
I DID IT Finally finished a thing ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝ Finally launched a thing ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝
